Noir.Design Wood Care Guide

With the right care, your Noir.Design pieces will only get better with age. Hardwood is a natural material — it responds to its environment, develops character over time, and rewards a little attention. Here’s everything you need to keep your pieces looking their best.

Day-to-Day Cleaning

For routine cleaning, a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all you need. Wipe along the grain to remove dust and light marks. Avoid abrasive cloths, scouring pads, or harsh chemical cleaners, as these can damage the satin varnish finish.

  • Do not soak or submerge in water
  • Dry immediately if the surface becomes wet
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can cause fading over time

Removing Marks & Stains

For stubborn marks, use a cloth lightly dampened with warm water and a small amount of mild soap. Wipe gently, then dry thoroughly with a clean cloth. For sticky residue, a small amount of white spirit on a cloth can help — always test on an inconspicuous area first.

Refreshing the Finish

Over time, the satin varnish may show light wear in high-use areas. To restore the finish:

  • Lightly sand the affected area with fine-grit sandpaper (240 grit), working along the grain
  • Wipe away any dust with a clean, dry cloth
  • Apply a thin coat of clear satin varnish and allow to dry fully before use
  • Repeat for a second coat if needed

This simple process can make a well-loved piece look as good as new.

Caring for Specific Wood Types

American Black Walnut

Walnut can lighten slightly with prolonged sun exposure. Keep out of direct sunlight where possible, and occasionally apply a small amount of walnut oil to unfinished edges to maintain its rich, dark tone.

European Oak

Oak is highly durable and responds well to standard care. Avoid excess moisture around joints and fixings to prevent any swelling over time.

Ash

Ash has a naturally pale, open grain that can absorb marks more readily than darker woods. Prompt cleaning of spills is especially important for Ash pieces.

Storage & Environment

Wood is a living material that naturally expands and contracts with changes in humidity and temperature. To keep your pieces in the best condition:

  • Avoid placing near radiators, open fires, or air conditioning units
  • Maintain a stable indoor humidity level where possible
  • If storing, wrap in a breathable cloth — never plastic, which can trap moisture
